Waifu
A "waifu" is a fictional character you feel a deep emotional connection to. The concept of forming parasocial relationships with fictional characters has been around since almost as long as fiction and fantasy has been around. The word has different meanings depending on whoever you ask - more mainstream-inclined people think that the word "Waifu" means just any anime girl you like, and think of it in an irony-poisened, insincere way, doing it as a big joke, either because they don't know better, or because they would have to present them as vulnerable, living in fright what their peers would think, and being afraid as being seen as a weirdo. Those people usually also use the word in plural form, implying they don't care about the concept at all, and just see it as quirky synonym for "anime girl". People who take waifu love more seriously are usually found on 4/a/, Wizchan, or Tohno-chan.
Waifu love can hurt a lot emotionally, and it gets only worse the more invested you are into it. Falling in love with a fictional character is more common than those ridiculing the concept admit; it's just rather seldom that people act upon those feelings and try to take it seriously.
In a sense waiufism is the last consequence of consumerism, because the emotional connection to the product is an actual attempt at a love relationship, whereas not even the most dedicated Funko-Pop collector or McDonalds consumer would actually speak of love, the same way you would love your wife (cough cough "Waifu"). The solution to this is to realize that your waifu is not some random product with her printed on it, or some TV show, or some game, rather than it is a concept. As you have your waifu, you expand on this concept of your waifu, trying to make it your own, gradually separating it from its origin with each new headcanon and fantasy situation added to it. There is this picture explaining the following with a picture of Hatsune Miku, but I can't find it, so here you go with it: A waifu is at first a concept, i.e. a class, in OOP terms, and the waifu you love, is an object. It is an actual thing you can work with that was first outlined as a concept. As such questions whether your waifu is a virgin, whether she is into this, or this, that, and the other, are irrelevant, because you are a free man with your own mind and can do whatever you want with your instance of the concept shown in the medium, that you got her or him from.
